The Ciutadella Park is named after the citadel that once stood there. Built in the 18th century, it was the largest fortress in Europe at that time.
Among the main attractions of the Park we have the Barcelona Zoo (which was once home to the albino gorilla Snowflake) and the "Cascada Monumental", a large and impressive fountain designed by the architect Josep Fontseré, with contributions from the young Antoní Gaudí, who later designed the Sagrada Familia, the Casa Batlló and the Casa Milà.
Because it was seen as a symbol of oppression of the inhabitants of Barcelona by the Spanish central government, the citadel of the Park was destroyed and rebuilt several times during the battles for power between the Spanish central government and the Catalan government.
The fortress was finally destroyed in the late 19th century. There are still 3 buildings intact from the citadel's era: The arsenal, which is now the Catalan Parliament; the church and the original governor's palace.
What else will you see?
The Ciutadella Park also contains the Natural Science Museum and the Museum of Zoology of Barcelona, both pavilions dating back to the 1888 World Fair.
All these places will be visited during this short tour of the Ciutadella Park, in which your guide will tell you facts, anecdotes and stories, as well as give you recommendations and tips on places to visit in Barcelona.
